Artist’s Statement

I have always loved the water. Growing up in Ohio, our family often vacationed in Florida where I spent a lot of time in the pool or the ocean.  The memories of frolicking in the water became the inspiration for a series of works I explored through printmaking.  I began taking photos of neighbor or friends’ kids visiting for a pool day to serve as models for the action.   The series became part of a city-wide public art project  and also part of the Phoenix Airport art collection.

As I age, I have found the water to be a sanctuary where I am weightless, and my mind is free of the noise of the news that worries or angers me.

My concerns over the effects of global warming on the ocean, as well as the human contribution to the destruction of aquatic life drive me to capture its beauty before it is lost forever. Endangered and recovering kelp, coral, fish and turtles, are at the heart of my recent work.  Making art helps assuage my feelings of helplessness.
